Happy New Year Friends,
Welcome to 2026. How are you all feeling? Hopefully excited to embrace the new year and new adventures. I wish this for you.
Traditionally, we start the new year by setting expectations or resolutions for the next year. While deciding how we can make these adjustments we often find ourselves critical of our past self. As we analyze past perceived failures and weaknesses often we fall into self judgement and negative thoughts. There is nothing wrong with setting goals for the next year but we should try to do it without judging ourselves negatively.
Ideally, we should be grateful as to where we are and how far we have come. Celebrate our progress and take every day as a new chance to be the best version of yourself; whether that day is the 1st of January or any other day of the year. Worrying about the past and things you cannot control can lead to depression and worrying about the future can bring anxiety.
If you find yourself clouded by New Year gloom or anxiety, instead of joy and excitement or if you simply want to find a new state of mind; join me in trying the Beginner's Mindset for 2026. The Beginner's Mindset is perfect for the New Year or just a new day - and here is why.
The Beginner's Mindset - how does it work?
The idea of the Beginner's Mindset is to recalibrate yourself to approach each event as though you have never done it before. Fresh and ready to learn, even if in reality you have already tried and maybe even failed.
Beginner's enter the space with an open mind, a mind of curiosity. They are willing to wait, learn and access before they navigate the task. Listening and observing before committing to familiarity is a wonderful skill. Through the Beginner's Mindset we can enter each day eager to learn and absorb the environment around us.
Teaching yoga I often cue my students to come to the mat with a curiosity. Approach each pose with a grace and compassion. I ask the student to observe and note how each pose settles on their bodies at that particular moment on that particular day. No judgement just curiosity.
The pose may not feel the same as it did the day before and that is okay. Each session is a new beginning - the Beginner's Mindset lets us open ourselves up to this theory and release any expectations.
Just as we come to the mat with this curiosity with a Beginner's Mindset we can greet each day, each year, each season in the same way. Each day, each year, each season is not the same so much lived experience has come since the previous one. We really are a beginner and have such a lot to learn about each moment. If we are practicing being present we are aware that we have never been in the particular spot before.
This is the Beginner's Mindset.
