Happy March Everyone,
March is always when I start to acknowledge how fast time is passing. Maybe this is because the seasons are changing; the days are lengthening as the sunset/sunrise time stretches out and I start to see plants peeking out through the soil as nature responds to the warmer weather and longer days. March is a time of growth and re-growth for mother nature. But in March, I often wonder, am I growing enough or is time is just passing me by?
I feel excited to see the buds start to show on the trees and the promise of more light for me to enjoy the outdoors. Often, I feel a little panicked as I do a check-in regarding the things I have yet to do this year. If I am honest, I begin to fear that time passing means I am getting older and I wonder what that may look like for myself and those I love.
I try to remember that time passing is not something I can control. I tell myself aging is natural and I should do it gracefully. But negative thoughts linger.
Yoga helps me with this. Yoga helps me slow down time. Yoga helps me to stop worrying about the past and the future. Yoga returns me to the present. I can reconnect to my body and mind as I move through poses or just sit quietly observing my breath or body.
My Mindfulness training also helps return me to the present. Mindfulness allows us to look for the beauty of each moment, to marvel in the miracles of nature. To find time to thank my body for the amazing ways it moves and works. Mindfulness reminds me that although each moment is fleeting I can use them well. I can spend time with the people and things which mean the most to me. Mindfulness helps me spend that precious time in the best way.
The Mindfulness and Yoga combination reminds me that the only real moment we can touch is right now. We can plan and prep, but the only moment that really counts is this one. This moment. The moment that you have chosen to share with me and read this page. Each moment that you spend on the yoga mat connecting to your breathe and body. Each moment you take to really observe your surroundings. Being present is acknowledging the beautiful world you have around you. It is a moment in the beautiful jigsaw puzzle of today and tomorrow.
Fear of future is anxiety, fear of the past is depression.
We should strive to avoid both anxiety and depression by living in the present. The present is the only moment we can control. We can control our reactions and emotions. The past has already gone. The future is not here yet. We can alter neither. So let us let that expectation go. Float away unaddressed.
We can plan and prepare for the future, we can apologize for the past. But that apology and that time planning and prepping happen in this one moment too. How our apologies, preparations and plans work out is in the future. The future is a period out of the present moment. I can only control that moment when it comes. Not yet.
So, this March, I choose to let go of any anxiety or sadness. I leave any expectations for the past or present in February. I choose to forgive myself for worrying. Instead, I choose to enjoy the re-growth of this year and I choose as much as possible to be present, in each special moment as it takes place. After all in the present is the only place we can be. So, let us make it the best moment to be in by choosing to releasing the burden of anxiety or depression about the past and the future.
The spring bulbs push through the dark soil and reach upwards to seek the sun and its own full potential. Let us do that too. Use each present moment as a building block to our full potential. Part of that beautiful jigsaw puzzle we are building.
Happy March. Let me know how your moments go and continue to be gentle with yourself. Try hard to live in the moment and release expectations. You are an amazing, beautiful human who is worthy of love and kindness from others.
