Happy April Everyone,
Are you a renter of your life or an owner?
This question came to me as I was listening to a podcast which was giving advice on how to improve your rental space. There were multiple recommendations about temporary fixes which could make your rental space feel more personalized.
Somewhere between advice on paint colors and how to maximize natural light from the windows; I came to the realization that there is a connection between where we live and how we live.
If you are renting a space you are less likely to invest your time and money. A rental is transient, impermanent it requires no commitment or very little commitment. But it is also restricted - you need to ask someone else the landlord/owner for permission to make changes to your space.
If you are renting your life you are less likely to commit to your true self.
Whether we rent or own our home is not the question we should ask. Often we do not have a choice as to whether we rent or own our homes. Interest rates, jobs, money and many other situations dictate whether we own or rent. But we can make a choice as to whether we rent or own our lives. The question I am addressing is how do we treat our lives.
Ask yourself these questions; Are you afraid to make big changes to yourself and our your surroundings ? Do you put up with situations you are not 100% happy with to keep the status quo ? Or to please someone else to the detriment of yourself? Are you reluctant to invest in the future? Your future?
At some points in my life, I too have treated myself as a rental. I have spent more time and energy on things outside of my own best interest. I have let the negative what-ifs keep me static, rather than allowing the positive what-ifs to keep me moving.
In a rented life, temporary fixes - may keep us static. These fixes may make things bearable, tolerable but do not invest in long term happiness.
A metaphorical new coat of paint in a room not owned by us may make us happy for a while. Freshen things up. But it is temporary. At some point we may have to paint the room back to please the landlord. A new coat of paint does not cover the fact that the room may simply be the wrong space for us.
There are times when renting space may be the right decision. Renting space gives us time to make good decisions, to pause and ponder on the next move. This can be the truth with regard to a home or your life. Renting may give us time to tread water and contemplate our life choices. But treading water is exhausting. Renting space can become a permanent choice rather than a pause or reset.
Staying stuck in one narrative or someone else's narrative is like living in one rental apartment all your life. We can see this in our yoga journey too. Sometimes we are living someone else's narrative - trying to keep up with how someone else's pose looks instead of taking ownership and listening to our own body and what it is telling you.
If you get stuck in that one narrative, or if your decisions are controlled or restricted by someone, something or even yourself? Consider a change. If a real, metaphoric, or self imposed landlord are dictating the range of your life? Consider an alternative. Consider if your expectations or someone else's are boxing you into a narrative. Change of your mindset into ownership is hard but worth it ? How will you know unless you try?
The reality is if you wait, for whatever reason, to feel better, to meet expectations, you may be waiting forever. Don't live in a metaphorical rental forever. Start experiencing things and trying new things you have often wondered about. Sometimes it is the experience which heals us. Listening to our own body and mind certainly can heal us. That is our yoga journey.
In your life, you do have permission to add color. You have the permission to paint your space whatever you wish, paint it multiple times and you never have to paint it back to the original color unless you want too. You do not have to live navigating the small window of natural light, you can build yourself a bigger window and let as much light in as you choose. Or heal in a calm, quiet space.
Taking possession of your life does not have to mean big change, it can be as simple as realizing you have the ability to change if that makes you feel happy. That you can be yourself.
The truth us we can change our lives for the better just by acknowledging that we are the owners of our lives. Owners of our future and our present. Owners of that amazing vessel we are living in; our own body and mind.
Take some time this month - April the month of renewal to think about whether you are renting space or are you the owner? Look around at nature and how it changes and renews around us. Spend some time on your yoga mat in meditation or movement. Let me know what you discover.
Let me know if I can help you in your yoga practice or on your mindful journey.
